Gods and Pawns by Kage Baker
Gods and Pawns by Kage Baker. New York: Tor, 2007. ISBN: 978-0-765-31552-6
The jacket lists “Stories of the Company” as a subtitle for this book, but since it doesn't appear on the title page, I didn't include it in my bibliographic listing, above. But that's the most significant piece of information that the Kage Baker fan will want to know. Here we have seven “company” stories that are definitely essential reading for fans of the series.
There are two Mendoza stories, and three Louis stories. One of them is the same story. We learn how the company deals with (or tries to deal with) its mistakes. We learn how Mr. William Randolph Hearst becomes one of the immortals. And much more. For more on Baker and her work, read my 2004 entry. What more needs to be said?
